Help us name our new hamster

Our new hamster

Our children have been exploring lot's of wildlife recently, which led to some of our older children wanting a pet for the nursery.

After deciding that some of their suggestions like a lion and a horse were not quite possible.  We decided between us that we should go for a smaller option and get them a pet hamster instead.

We had a talk with the kids about looking after small animals and the responsibilities that come with them; what happens if they were unwell, how to feed them etc.  The children were all excited about the prospect of their new pet.

Choosing our hamster

Our senior member of staff went to the pet store and brought a lovely white and grey hamster who was used to being held.  This was important as we wanted the hamster to feel comfortable straight away at our nursery and would allow the children to hold and touch the hamster without the hamster getting scared and potentially biting someone.

Our new pet arrives

The day finally came for our new hamster to join our family.

The children all sit around in anticipation for the big reveal.  This is quite possibly the quietest the nursery has been.  Some braver children sat at the front, whilst others chose to watch from the back.

Below you can see pictures of their first meeting of our hamster.

Our Dilemma

We do have one problem however.  We can't decide on a name.  This is where you come in.  Below our some suggestions from parents, children and staff.

Help us choose our hamsters name.  VOTE BELOW.

We will decide by Friday 29th September.  Until then he remains nameless 🙁

Fire Department Visit (Nursery Activities)

Our Fire Department Visit (Nursery Activities)

Recently, the children of Little Blessings had a very special visit from Woodside Fire Station. Learning about different occupations is an important aspect to the children’s learning and development, as when our children grow, they will need to experience different occupations in life.

The Woodside Fire Department showed the children their fire equipment; how the fire engine works; explained their job role and even showed the children how the fire hose works. From this, our little learners gained new knowledge from their experience and have been given the opportunity to extend their vocabulary through role play.

Why we done this nursery activity?

It is important for our children to understand what happens in a fire and how the fire brigade help us, however, do our parents know some of the triggers to causing home fires? Cooking appliances were the source of ignition in 50 per cent of accidental dwelling fires and 52 per cent of non-fatal casualties in dwelling fires in 2015/16.

Useful Fire Safety Tips:

Here are some of the London Fire Brigades tips to prevent home fires. For the full list please visit the website: http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/Documents/FSITH_leaflet.pdf

1. Never leave pans unattended when cooking

2. Don’t overload electrical sockets

3. Keep candles well away from curtains, furniture and clothes

4. Try to smoke outside and make sure cigarettes are put right out

5. Switch off and unplug electrical items such as TVs and avoid charging devices like mobile phones when you sleep.

The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration

The Queen's 90th Birthday Celebration Parade

The Queen celebrating her birthday in London

Although the queen turns 90 on the 21st April she doesn’t celebrate it until May 12th over four days. That’s a lot partying for a queen. During this period the Queen and other members of the Royal family will attend a pageant to celebrate the Queen’s life.  This will be held at Windsor Castle.

This event will be held every evening from May 12th to May 15th. The Queen’s 90th birthday celebration will be an event not to miss with the last night being shown live on ITV, hosted by Ant and Dec. It will be a 90-minute long extravaganza with 900 horses and more than 1,500 riders and performers.

On her actual birthday she will be attending Windsor Castle where you may get a chance to see her close up as she does her royal walk-a-bout, but attend early in order to get the best spot to see her.

Reading with your child

Why you should read with your child

Reading with your child is important and helps your child in three key ways.  Reading with your child helps:

Develop your child’s communication and literacy skills

reading with your child read with your child

Build a stronger relationship with you and your child

reading with your child read with your child

Develop all areas of their academic development

reading with your child read with your child

Tips on how to read with your child:Read with your child reading with your child

Have a set time for reading

Find a quiet area, turn off and omit any distractions for example the TV or mobile

Let your child choose the book

Your child will be more engaged in the book if they choose it and will give them confidence and independence as it shows that you care about what they think

Did you know?

'Unborn babies can hear your voice from 18 weeks, so you can start to read to your child before they’re even born'

Read with your child reading with your childSit close together

This also helps them be more engaged. Help and encourage them to hold the book and turn the pages themselves.

Point to the pictures

If there are images in the book point to them and tell the child what they are or you can get the child to point to stuff in the book for example you can ask where’s the blue ball or how many sheep can you see?

Did you know?

'The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school'

Read with your child reading with your childAsk questions about the book

As with the last point it is important to get your child to interact with the book to keep them engaged. Ask questions like what will happen next or what’s the next word (if the story uses repeated refrain).  Other questions you could ask are:

  1. How do you think the character is feeling?
  2. How does that scenario/ or the book make you feel?
  3. What do you think they should do next?
  4. What would you do if you were them?

Try also to relate what is happening in the story to situations they have encountered in real life.  Talking about the characters and dilemmas helps children to understand what is happening better and a great way to discuss different issues.

Did you know?

'Only 53 percent of children ages three to five were read to daily by a family member (1999). Children in families with incomes below the poverty line are less likely to be read to aloud everyday than are children in families with incomes at or above poverty'

Read with your child reading with your childFinally have fun

The most important thing is that you and your child enjoy the time together. So make funny noises, do silly faces and have fun.

Why not try:

Making it up – a fun thing to do is to allow your child to make up their own story and their own scenario based on what they can see happening in the pictures

We encourage parents to read with their children here at Little Blessings

Because we understand the importance of parents reading to their children, over the last few weeks we’ve had different parents come in to read.

The children loved it! They were surprised and excited about having their parents read to them at nursery and all sat intently and listened to the stories.

PANCAKE DAY

Our children made and decorated pancakes.  View our efforts on our facebook page.

www.facebook.com/littleblessingscroydon

A simple pancake recipe:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 large egg or 1 egg and one yolk
  • ½ pint/280ml milk
  • 4oz/110g plain flour (4 heaped dessertspoons)
  • 1 tbsp melted butter

METHOD

Sift the flour into a bowl and make a well in the middle. Break in the egg (and yolk, if using) and add apinch of salt and a splash of the milk. Whisk the egg, gradually incorporating the flour, to make a smooth cream. Whisk in the rest of the milk and the melted butter.

Brush a hot pan with vegetable oil before adding your batter and swilling thinly around the pan, tipping the pan so the mixture spreads evenly. It will begin to cook immediately: pour any excess back into the bowl.

When the pancake is browned on the bottom and the very edges are beginning to lift away, give the pan a shake to make sure the pancake is loose. If it is sticking anywhere, use a spatula to loosen it. When it moves freely, then you are ready to toss it - or, if you're less confident, use a spatula to turn it over. The other side will only need a few seconds. Slide out of the pan, and top with a topping of your choice

Nursery Activity – Celebrating Martin Luther King Day

Here at Little Blessing's we ensure to celebrate all festivals and cultural celebrations, particularly British. We also try to include this in meals and ensure that the children eat a variety of foods from around the world. We always spend a term looking at "all around the world" where we look at clothes, foods, music, celebrations and traditions.

Martin Luther King Day

Today we have been learning about 'Dr Martin Luther King'

Martin Luther King Day is celebrated today, 18th January 2016, in the US, and all over the world.  Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader of the civil rights movement in 1960s America, which meant that he hoped that black people and white people would begin to live together peacefully, with equal rights. He was assassinated in 1968.

When we teach children about Martin Luther King Jr, we teach them how one man, full of determination, made a change in the world. We teach them that everyone, in their own way, can make a difference - however small, for good (or bad).

Some activities we got involved in today in honour of MLK  was learning a poem by him called:

 'Colours'

Wouldn't it be terrible? Wouldn't it be sad?
If just one single colour was the colour that we had?
If everything was purple? Or red? Or blue? Or green?
If yellow, pink, or orange was all that could be seen?
Can you just imagine how dull the world would be
If just one single colour was all that we could see?

Some of our older children then helped the staff come with our own poem on equality.  Do you like it:

Our Poem:

It's nice to be friends

with the people around us,

No matter the colour they had

It would be sad,

If we just stick to one,

everyone would be equal .

No matter of the colour of their  skin,

Can you imagine how life would be

If we wasn't friends with everyone we see

Little Blessings Staff and Children

We also looked at different photo's and pictures of him and coloured in pictures of him also using colours that he used in his poem.
